First Cemetery of Athens

The First Cemetery of Athens is located at the end of Anapafseos Street, in central Athens. It first opened in 1837 and it is still in use today. Numerous sculptures and monuments of high artistic value can be found there and it is the resting place of choice for almost all famous Greeks and foreigners.  The most impressive tomb is that of Heinrich Scliemann. but also that of Karapanos, and the family tomb of Zografos. Perhaps the most famous, and a personal favourite, is the statue on the tomb of Sofia Afentaki by the sculptor Yannoulis Chalepas.
